If your preferred grass is St. Augustinegrass, it’s a good idea to plan to establish your lawn during the spring or early summer months. This grass has a green to blue dense turf that is ideal for most soils and climates throughout Florida. Instead of propagating through seeds, St. Augustine is established via vegetative propagation. The easiest way to establish a lawn of St. Augustinegrass is through sodding.
The best part about sodding is that you have an instant lawn! You don’t have to wait for the grass to grow. All you have to do is lay down squares of sod over bare, moist soil, making sure the piece fit together without any cracks or gaps between the squares. These sodded areas should be watered at least twice a day to ensure that the roots properly make contact with the soil. It is recommended that you use a quarter-inch of water each time for 14 days. It typically takes about 10 to 14 days for the sod to hold fast. Afterwards, you’ll only need to water as needed.
